I am unbelievably excited and honored to be hosting a screening of what I think is truly One of the Greatest Films Of All Time, the extraordinary Mad Max: Fury Road, a masterpiece of modern cinema and perhaps The Best Action Film Ever Made.
Getting this film made is almost as much of a miracle as the movie itself, and its journey to the big screen, the eventual massive success, and its place in film history are incredible stories that I want to share with you here...before you join me on May 14th at The Lake Theater to see it on the big screen!
Background and Development
Mad Max: Fury Road is a movie that shouldn’t exist. It’s a miracle of filmmaking.
Originally conceived by George Miller in 1987, it languished in development hell for decades, facing numerous setbacks, including the September 11 attacks, the Iraq War, and controversies surrounding Mel Gibson. After a long and arduous road, Miller finally brought his vision to life, with Tom Hardy stepping into the role of Max Rockatansky and Charlize Theron stealing the show as Imperator Furiosa.
The film took an unorthodox approach to scripting—Miller famously created massive storyboards instead of a traditional screenplay. Every vehicle, every character, and every scene had a deeply considered backstory, even if it never made it onto the screen. Fury Road was more than just a continuation of the Mad Max saga—it was a reinvention, a reimagining, and ultimately, a revolution in action cinema.
Plot Overview
Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy), a haunted loner, is captured by the War Boys, the fanatical followers of the tyrannical Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne). Used as a “blood bag” for the ailing War Boy Nux (Nicholas Hoult), Max is inadvertently pulled into a high-octane escape mission led by Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron), who has smuggled Joe’s enslaved “wives” out of his Citadel.
What follows is essentially one long, relentless chase sequence across a wasteland of sand, fire, and fury. Furiosa and Max must fend off Joe’s forces, as well as the many violent factions of the wasteland, all while seeking a better future in the mythical “Green Place.” When they realize that paradise is gone, they decide to return and seize control of the Citadel, leading to a climactic, breathless battle that is nothing short of cinematic perfection.
Why Mad Max: Fury Road Is a Masterpiece
1. The Greatest Action Film Ever Made
There has never been an action film quite like Fury Road, and there may never be one again. Every frame of this movie is a shot of adrenaline. The choreography of the action, the editing, and the stunning practical effects are awe-inspiring. The film’s kinetic energy is sustained for its entire runtime, delivering some of the most breathtaking set pieces ever committed to film.
The vehicular stunts are jaw-dropping. The polecats sequence alone—where War Boys swing between moving vehicles on giant poles—is one of the most innovative and insane action set pieces ever filmed. The film’s reliance on practical effects over CGI lends it a raw, visceral quality that few modern blockbusters can match.
2. Charlize Theron’s Imperator Furiosa
Tom Hardy is great as Max, but this is Furiosa’s movie. Charlize Theron delivers one of the most powerful performances of her career, turning Furiosa into one of the greatest action heroes of all time. She’s fierce, determined, and deeply human, making her one of the most compelling protagonists of the decade. The dynamic between Max and Furiosa—two reluctant allies learning to trust each other—is beautifully handled and adds emotional weight to the film’s relentless action.
3. The Visual and Auditory Spectacle
George Miller’s direction is masterful. The cinematography by John Seale turns the wasteland into a surreal, almost painterly landscape. The use of color is astonishing—this is a post-apocalyptic world bathed in rich oranges and blues, rather than the dull grays we’ve come to expect from dystopian films.
Junkie XL’s thunderous score is an auditory assault in the best way possible. It propels the film forward with pounding percussion and orchestral chaos, perfectly complementing the mayhem on screen.
4. Thematic Depth and World-Building
Beyond the spectacle, Fury Road is a film with layers. It’s a feminist parable, a meditation on redemption, and a scathing critique of authoritarian rule. Immortan Joe’s dictatorship, built on control of water and the subjugation of women, feels disturbingly relevant. The film’s themes of hope, survival, and revolution elevate it beyond its genre trappings.
Personal Connection and Impact
Not only was Mad Max: Fury Road the best film of 2015, but it also became a deeply personal film for me. It was playing in theaters during the period when I transitioned from drinking to sobriety. I saw it both as a drinker and as someone newly sober, and the experience was profound. Watching Furiosa and her allies fight for their freedom, to reclaim their lives, resonated with me in a way that few films ever have.
Conclusion
There are great action films, and then there’s Mad Max: Fury Road. It stands alone as a cinematic marvel, an unrelenting masterpiece that changed the genre forever. It’s a film that I have watched countless times, and each viewing only reinforces its brilliance.
In a year of change for me, both personally and professionally, Fury Road was the film that defined 2015. It was exhilarating, groundbreaking, and deeply personal—just as the best films always are.
